NAKEDPAK

The circle of it: This company wraps ready-to-cook meals in an edible, algae-based film that dissolves completely during cooking — eliminating plastic packaging and microplastic contamination at the source

NAKEDPAK

Summary

NakedPak is the world’s first brand of microplastic-free meals wrapped entirely in edible packaging. The company produces a food-grade film made primarily from agar — a natural gelling agent derived from red algae — combined with other safe, plant-based ingredients. This transparent, tasteless film wraps ready-to-cook meals including pasta, rice, ramen, oats, and more. The packaging protects the food during storage and transport, then dissolves entirely during cooking, leaving nothing behind — no plastic, no microplastics, no waste. The process mirrors the logic of fruit and vegetable skins: rinse it as you would an apple, cook as usual, eat the entire thing. Spices and sauces can even be incorporated into the film itself, creating a flavoured packaging that becomes part of the dish. NakedPak currently operates on a waitlist model, with products including Naked Pasta, Naked Rice, Naked Ramen, Naked Oats, and a Naked Bundle available for pre-order. (Source)

Story

NakedPak was founded by Naama Nicotra, an Israeli product designer whose frustration with unsustainable food packaging led to what began as a graduation project at HIT (Holon Institute of Technology) in Israel. Nicotra’s central insight was the “Apple Principle” — just as an apple needs no packaging beyond its own edible skin, food could be wrapped in something that becomes part of the meal itself. (Source) The concept won the DesignWanted Award 2023 in the concept design category, bringing international attention to the idea. Nicotra subsequently co-founded NakedPak as a company alongside Isabel Goldberg, who brings over 20 years of expertise in flexible packaging technology and compliance as CTO. (Source) What started as five prototype dishes — soup, spaghetti, curry, oats, and ice cream — has evolved into a growing product range, with the company actively developing its technology toward commercial scale. NakedPak is registered as Nakedpak Ltd and is based in Israel.

The idea for this zero-waste, edible meal packaging solution came from my frustration with the existing unsustainable food packaging options. Every day, we generate more and more waste from our food purchases, and I wanted to find a solution that would reduce this impact. I was particularly drawn to the way that fruits and vegetables come naturally packaged in their own skins and peels.
