GOB

The circle of it: This company produces compostable ear plugs from mycelium, offering an alternative to traditional foam or plastic earplugs

GOB

Summary

Gob is creating compostable earplugs made from mycelium, the root-like structure of fungi. Rather than using plastic, Gob’s signature product uses lab-grown mycelium foam, developed in partnership with mycelium technology firms such as Ecovative, which enables the earplugs to be fully home-compostable and free of microplastics and toxic additives. The material naturally dampens sound, providing balanced noise reduction and comfort comparable to traditional foam plugs while minimizing environmental impact. After use, the earplugs break down into nutrient-rich soil, effectively “feeding the earth” rather than contributing to landfill waste. Story

Gob’s founder Lauryn Menard realized, after an especially loud spin class that compostable earplugs didn’t exist. (Source) At the time, she was running a sustainable design agency focused on low-impact products, and that experience in regenerative design helped shape her vision for Gob. Menard eventually left her agency to focus full-time on building Gob, assembling a team (co-founders Baillie Mishler and Michael Brand) to found Gob in 2023. (Source)

“After the class I asked the instructor if something could be changed about that and they pointed to a bucket of neon orange foam earplugs they offer their class-goers. Even though I wear earplugs ALL of the time because I have a legally-deaf mom and live with a partner that is in a hardcore band (and who unfortunately also snores), the fact that these little things are polluting and bad hadn’t occurred to me until that moment. Being a biomaterial expert and seeing how simple the product was, I knew that we would be the people who would be able to solve this problem. So, that’s where it all began.”
