JIMINY ECO TOYS

The circle of it: This company has created a marketplace for exclusively eco-friendly toys that feature natural materials or recycled materials, minimal or no plastic and highlights local brands.

JIMINY ECO TOYS

Summary

Jiminy Eco Toys has created an online marketplace for customers who are sustainability- minded and want to buy eco-friendly toys for their children. The toy industry uses over 40 tons of plastic for every $1 million in revenues and is the most plastic-intensive industry in the world, according to their website. (Source). As of today, 90% of the toys on the market are made of plastic. To combat the pervasive use of plastics in the hands of children, Jiminy Eco Toys sources plastic-free, eco-friendly and sustainable toys that are ideally locally made. The company is combating the use of unsustainable materials like plastic (that typically cannot be recycled) and also the carbon footprint of transporting these toys from far distances (typically, China). The company only sells toys made out of natural materials (wood and innovative bio-plastics, recycled cardboard, and paper – or safe recycled plastics) and those that are made in Europe, fewer than 2000 km away from where the toys are shipped to. Story

Founder Sharon Keilthy was hard pressed to find a toy that “she could feel good about” for the daughter’s fourth birthday. She was looking for toys that were plastic-free and locally made, but found very few options. She took matters into her own hands, quit her job and started Jiminy Eco toys in 2018. (Source)

“When you start a business, try to make it fail, and fast. Do the test that will prove or disprove its viability right at the start. Because if it’s not viable, best to find out quickly and move on to a better idea, than to linger on an unviable idea”
