Summary

Fixits makes repair more accessible to its customers by selling a bio-compatible repair material that can be molded into various shapes and sizes to be used in repair projects. The company, on their website, advertises their product to tackle any kind of “I don’t have time for this to be broken” product in a home. FixIts was founded to help reduce waste by empowering consumers to repair broken products and to make repair fun and accessible. The product is a malleable substance that can be heated up and molded. The product has no expiry date, and can be “endlessly” remolded for various uses. For example, rather than tossing away an electronic charger that is bent and exposed to wire, a Fixit strip can be melted and molded such that the broken part is covered up and safe to use again. In another example, a Fixit can be used to repair a broken zipper by sticking the Fixit to the zipper. The strips act as super glue and can be molded to any surface. The company makes and manufactures its product and its packaging material in the UK.  (Source) The product are marketed as compostable in an industrial composting facility.

Story

Founder Chris Lefteri has a background in product design and biomaterials. The material for Fixits was invented in this process when Lefteri was writing his first book in 2000. Lefteri and his wife started using this material to fix things around their home, and then realized it could be a business idea. A former student of Chris’, Forrest Radford then joined the project as a co-founder. (Source)

We need to come at the sustainability issue from a new angle…it’s no longer going to be about using guilt as an emotion to drive consumers to think twice about their carbon footprint, it’s about making recycling fun, desirable and driving an approach that means you want to do good rather than the traditional approach of thinking that you should do good.
