The circle of it: This company upcycles discarded skateboards into beautiful furniture.

Summary

Adrian Martinus is a design studio that produces homewares out of upcycled wood materials, including used skateboards. Skateboards tend to be a difficult material to recycle since a skateboard is a composite of many materials that need to be stripped down before they can be used again. The design studio repurposes discarded skateboards donated by the local skateboarding community into sustainable home decor. Their offerings range from furniture to earrings and other unique items. The process begins by laying out a collection of boards in the sun. After several hours outside, the team scrapes off the warmed grip tape from the skateboards and proceeds to sand off the paint, graphic, and clear coat. The wood is then polished and then can be used by the artists to create new products. (Source) In addition to skateboards, the company works with old gym flooring and aged planks from barns. Story

Adrian Martinus was founded by brothers Adrian and Martinus Pool in 2012. As carpenters, they were frustrated with the construction material waste they encountered on worksites, and as avid skateboarders, they sought to give new life to broken skateboards. (Source)

“We don’t want you to immediately see it and think, ‘That’s an old skateboard’…when you hear that it’s a recycled skateboard, we want that to be a surprise.”
