NEUTRAL FUELS

The circle of it: This company sources used cooking oil from the restaurant industry and creates diesel to be used by the trucking industry.

Summary

Neutral Fuels collects waste cooking oil and transforms it into a biofuel, which is a commercial viable replacement for the widely used fossil fuel used in diesel engines. Biofuel is a generic name for fuels made from renewable sources, in this case–used vegetable oil which is specifically made to be used in diesel engines. The company creates local Net Zero biodiesel from waste, which significantly reduce carbon emissions. The company has also pioneered the use of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors coupled with apps to optimize waste and fuel, saving time and money. The biofuel can be used in any diesel engine without any modifications. This includes diesel engines in cars, buses, trucks, boats, ships, heavy construction equipment, and generators. The process of creating the biofuel is called transesterification and is created by reacting vegetable oils with methanol in the presence of a catalyst like sodium or potassium hydroxide. This results in the production of fatty acid methyl esters (biofuel) with glycerin as a by-product. (Source)

Story

Founder Karl Feilder was an engineer with an MBA who had had a successful career in the IT industry. He wanted to spend the rest of his career working on climate-related issues. Having worked with a project with McDonald’s regarding their carbon footprint across 37 countries, the team quickly realized that they could be self-sufficient in fuel in their supply chain is they could find a way to recycle their cooking oil into biofuel. Feilder was interested in pioneering this concept in the UAE and he convinced the Dubai government that they needed a biofuel industry. “Unlike fossil-fuel producers, we see that the raw materials to make sustainable fuels are not located in pockets in a small number of countries in the world. Those raw materials are located pretty evenly everywhere in the world where there are human beings—which means that it doesn’t make sense to aggregate all fuel raw materials and ship it halfway around the world to a huge production plant, especially when the consumption needs to be back where it came from.”
